Girlfriend confirms motorcyclist’s documents were valid as grief persists following Kowloon Bay tragedy

15th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) On 3rd January, a tragic motorcycle accident occurred on Wang Kee Street in Kowloon Bay, claiming the life of 27-year-old motorcyclist Ken Wong. According to surveillance footage, Wong was riding his motorcycle when he encountered an off-duty customs officer attempting to block his path. The officer’s actions resulted in a collision that led to Wong’s fatal crash into a roadside barrier.

In the aftermath, Wong’s girlfriend has clarified that both his driving licence and insurance were valid at the time of the incident, contradicting early reports suggesting otherwise. The driving licence is set to expire on 1st April 2025, while the insurance policy was renewed on 4th December 2024, valid until 3rd December 2025. Despite this, Wong’s girlfriend and his mother continue to grapple with their grief, expressing a desire for a thorough and fair investigation by the authorities.

The couple had communicated about renewing the driving licence just days before the accident. Wong’s girlfriend, Miss Leung, recalled reviewing their messages and confirmed that he had asked for her assistance in processing the licence. She stated that initial confusion regarding the insurance documents arose, but they were ultimately located on Wong’s phone.

As the investigation continues, Miss Leung has voiced her frustration over public speculation surrounding the incident. She emphasised that, despite claims of speeding or reckless behaviour, there is no substantial evidence to support such allegations. Her plea for justice underscores the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on both families, with Miss Leung stating, “We just want the police to conduct a fair investigation.”

With nearly half a month having passed since the incident, Miss Leung’s grief remains palpable, describing her emotional state as “stably collapsing” and acknowledging the profound impact on both her and Wong’s family. The Customs officer involved has been released on bail, with legal experts suggesting that he may face charges depending on the investigation’s findings.
