5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) As Super Typhoon Yagi bears down on Hong Kong, the Government Flying Service (GFS) has been actively collecting crucial data on the storm’s structure. On 4th and 5th September, the service deployed a Challenger 605 aircraft to approach the eye of the typhoon, gathering valuable insights into its dynamics.
During these two operations, a total of four pilots and two aircrew officers were dispatched to drop sondes—devices designed to capture atmospheric data—approximately 200 nautical miles southeast of Hong Kong, or around 400 kilometres from the city. These sondes measured critical parameters such as wind speed, temperature, and pressure as they descended through the storm.
