Hang Seng Index opens lower as Tencent continues downward trend

8th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hang Seng Index opened down 56 points, or 0.29%, at 19,390 points. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell by 17 points, or 0.24%, to 7,032 points, and the Tech Index decreased by 2 points, or 0.06%, to 4,351 points.

In the tech sector, stocks showed mixed performance. Tencent faced ongoing selling pressure, dropping 2.2%. Xiaomi Group declined by 1.3%, while Alibaba rose by 0.2%. Meituan saw a slight increase of 0.1%, JD.com climbed 1.1%, and Kuaishou also gained 0.1%.

Financial stocks were predominantly down, with HSBC Holdings opening flat. AIA Group dipped by 0.1%, Ping An Insurance fell by 0.5%, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing remained unchanged.

In the automotive sector, shares exhibited varied movements. BYD gained 0.1%, while Geely Auto decreased by 0.1%. NIO fell by 1.3%, but Xpeng Motors rose significantly by 4.6%, with Li Auto also increasing by 0.1%.
