Heavy downpours in Beijing’s Mentougou District lead to two deaths

31st July 2023 – (Beijing) Continuous heavy downpours in Beijing’s Mentougou District since Saturday evening have led to the deaths of two people, according to local authorities. The two individuals were found in a river during an emergency patrol on Monday morning and showed no vital signs.

From 8pm Saturday to noon on Monday, the average rainfall recorded at multiple stations in Mentougou was 320.8 mm. Meteorological authorities in Beijing maintained a red alert for rainstorms on Monday morning, warning that flash floods and landslides could occur in small- and medium-sized rivers.

The heavy downpours have caused disruptions to transportation and infrastructure in the area, with some roads and bridges, closed due to flooding. Local authorities have advised residents to avoid going out unless necessary and to take precautions against floods and landslides.
