12th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A failure in the baggage handling system at Hong Kong International Airport occurred on 11th January, necessitating a switch to manual operations. This malfunction resulted in numerous passengers arriving at their destinations without their luggage.
Reports have emerged from travellers on flights operated by HK Express and Hong Kong Airlines, who expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the airlines regarding the situation. Some passengers, who arrived in Seoul, were left without essential items such as winter clothing and asthma medication, forcing them to wait for over six hours to retrieve their luggage at Incheon Airport. Meanwhile, other travellers bound for Bangkok are still awaiting their bags, which remain in Hong Kong.
In response to inquiries, the Airport Authority confirmed that the issue stemmed from a technical problem affecting one of the eight sorting devices, which slowed the processing of baggage.
The impact of the system failure has led to confusion and distress among passengers. Many found themselves without critical items during their travels, with some needing to purchase clothing and other necessities due to their bags not arriving on time.
Criticism has been directed at both the Airport Authority and the airlines for their handling of the situation, particularly regarding their communication efforts. Passengers have called for better information dissemination to prevent similar occurrences in the future, highlighting the need for timely updates during operational disruptions.
