5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) At 9.30pm today, the Hong Kong Observatory issued an Amber Rainstorm Warning, indicating that heavy rain, exceeding 30 millimetres per hour, is either currently falling or expected to fall across the territory. This warning comes alongside the enforcement of the No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal, highlighting the severity of the weather conditions.
The Amber Rainstorm Warning signifies that flooding is likely in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with heavy rain and potential flooding. Flash floods are a concern, and individuals are advised to stay clear of watercourses to avoid dangerous situations.
As of 9pm, Super Typhoon Yagi was situated approximately 330 kilometres south of Hong Kong, projected to move west-northwest at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour. The storm is expected to brush within 300 kilometres of Hong Kong by tomorrow morning, bringing with it gale-force winds of 63 kilometres per hour or more from the northeast quarter.
The Observatory forecasts that the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 will remain in effect at least until noon tomorrow, with heavy squally showers anticipated throughout the day. The intense rainbands associated with Yagi are already impacting Hong Kong, resulting in very rough seas and dangerous swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and refrain from engaging in water sports.
Recent readings at various locations have shown maximum sustained winds of 83 kilometres per hour at Waglan Island, 80 kilometres per hour at Tate’s Cairn, and 75 kilometres per hour at Cheung Chau Beach, with gusts reaching up to 115 kilometres per hour in some areas.
Furthermore, a Thunderstorm Warning was issued earlier at 6:50 p.m., set to remain valid until 10.45pm tonight, adding to the caution required as the storm approaches. Residents should remain vigilant and prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
