Hokkaido town faces challenges following sardine beaching incident

8th January 2025 – (Matsumae) A town in Japan’s northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido, has reported a significant sardine beaching that occurred in late December, but local officials are struggling to arrange for the disposal of the fish due to the New Year holidays.

Residents of Matsumae are increasingly worried about hygiene, as it has been over a week since the beaching was first detected on December 28, with the dead sardines stretching approximately 900 metres along the Sea of Japan.

The cause of this unusual occurrence remains unknown. “They’re starting to rot. The smell isn’t bad yet because the temperatures are low, but I hope they dispose of them soon,” commented one local resident.

Experts from the Hakodate Fisheries Research Institute suggest that the sardines may have been driven ashore by a sudden drop in water temperatures. The town had previously experienced a similar incident in December 2021, when approximately 24 tons of sardines were disposed of following a beaching.

Despite the low temperatures preventing an immediate foul odour, the local authorities have yet to determine a timeline for the clean-up operation. The town is currently exploring options for the removal of the fish, but no firm plans have been established as of yet.

As the situation develops, residents remain vigilant about potential hygienic implications and the challenges posed by the New Year holiday period.
