1st October 2024 – (Hong Kong) At 9.05pm, Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong became the stage for a spectacular fireworks display, marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The event, which illuminated the night sky for 23 minutes across eight distinct sequences, released a total of 31,888 fireworks, captivating hundreds of thousands of spectators on both sides of the harbour.

Originally scheduled to begin at 9pm, the fireworks were preceded by an unexpected announcement at 8.57pm that the much-anticipated drone show had to be cancelled. Authorities cited “ionospheric scintillation,” a phenomenon affecting satellite signal reception, which prevented the drones from performing their programmed routines, including forming images of pandas and the number ’75’.

Despite the last-minute cancellation of the drone segment, the fireworks display proceeded with only a slight delay, starting at 9.05pm. The show included a variety of patterns and styles, dazzling the audience with its vibrancy and the technical prowess behind its execution.

The event drew a large crowd, with many enthusiasts arriving hours in advance to secure prime viewing spots along the harbour. A tourist who had come specifically for the photography opportunities, expressed his anticipation for the drone show. “I’ve attended several fireworks displays here, but the inclusion of drones was particularly exciting,” he remarked. Unfortunately, the cancellation somewhat dampened the spirits, but the stunning fireworks quickly recaptured the audience’s enthusiasm.

The government and event organisers implemented extensive safety and crowd management measures. Traffic restrictions were in place, and several MTR station exits were temporarily closed to control the flow of people. The Transport Department anticipated an increase in cross-border travel following the event and advised travellers to plan accordingly, especially since the MTR service hours were not extended.
