4th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) In the face of soaring rental prices in Hong Kong, an increasing number of residents are seeking refuge in Shenzhen, where living conditions are spacious and comfortable. Recently, a Hong Kong expatriate shared her experience on Xiaohongshu, detailing how she and her husband secured an 800 sq ft apartment for only 4,500 RMB (HK$4,780), transforming their weekends into a rejuvenating escape in a new “dual-city lifestyle.”
The blogger titled her video “Is Renting a Shenzhen Apartment for Weekends a Waste?” and explained their approach of “earning in Hong Kong, spending in Shenzhen.” After moving to Hong Kong five years ago, she realised the constraints of limited living space and heightened life pressures. Six months ago, the couple decided to rent a larger unit in Shenzhen, where they now retreat every weekend to unwind.
Their Shenzhen apartment, costing about HK$4,780 per month, features a spacious layout that includes a living room, dining area, bathroom, open kitchen, and terrace on the lower level, with ample space for relaxation. The upper floor contains a bedroom with an en suite bathroom and a generous double bed, addressing their previous storage and laundry challenges in Hong Kong.
Despite only spending weekends in Shenzhen, the couple finds immense joy and convenience in their arrangement. The video has sparked lively discussions among Xiaohongshu users, many of whom expressed envy for this enviable dual-city lifestyle. Comments ranged from admiration for the spacious living conditions to personal aspirations of emulating the couple’s setup, as others consider downsizing their Hong Kong accommodations in favour of a larger, more affordable space in Shenzhen.
