10th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) On 7th January, during the New Year Mark Six draw, two winning tickets shared a record jackpot of HK$128 million. Each ticket, purchased for HK$10, netted its holder HK$69,234,020. Among the winners was a marine police officer who has since retired.

However, not everyone was celebrating. A Hong Kong man living in the UK expressed his frustration on social media after asking family to purchase a ticket for him. Despite selecting numbers that were almost identical to the winning combination, he discovered that five of his six chosen numbers were just one digit away from the jackpot numbers. This led him to lament his fate, describing it as “hellish.”

His post sparked considerable discussion online, with many users offering consolation, saying, “You’re just like 99.99999999999999% of people who don’t win the jackpot; it’s definitely not hell,” and others humorously suggesting, “Next time, remember to share your numbers; I’ll bet the adjacent one.”

The winning numbers were 8, 13, 18, 23, 31, and 47, with the additional number being 16. The frustrated player had selected 9, 12, 17, 24, 30, and 49, making his near-win particularly poignant.

Inquiries also arose regarding the legality of purchasing lottery tickets from abroad. According to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, betting accounts are only available to customers within Hong Kong. Individuals outside the territory must ensure they comply with local laws regarding gambling.
