5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that it will issue the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 at 6.20pm today due to the approaching typhoon, Yagi. Described as a mature storm, Yagi is expected to maintain super typhoon intensity and will pass approximately 300 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong by tomorrow morning.
As a result of Yagi’s outer circulation, strong winds have already begun to affect various regions across the territory, with occasional gales reported on high ground. The Observatory warns that local winds will strengthen progressively, leading to deteriorating weather conditions tonight and into tomorrow morning. Gale winds associated with Yagi are anticipated to impact the Pearl River Estuary.
Intense rainbands linked to Yagi are set to gradually affect the region later today, bringing heavy squally showers tomorrow. The sea conditions are expected to be very rough, accompanied by significant swells. Authorities are urging the public to stay away from shorelines and refrain from water sports. Those engaged in outdoor work or activities should be vigilant of changing weather conditions.
Recent data from the Observatory indicates maximum sustained winds of 51 km/h at Waglan Island and Tate’s Cairn, with gusts exceeding 60 km/h at those locations and reaching 76 km/h at Green Island. Residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions and adhere to safety guidelines as the storm approaches.
