31st July 2024 – (Paris) When Hong Kong’s Edgar Cheung claimed his second Olympic gold medal in the individual fencing event here, the 27-year-old cemented his status as a true sporting icon. Yet it is Cheung’s off-the-piste romance that has really captured the public’s imagination.
Cheung’s victory, which made him the first Hong Kong athlete to win multiple Olympic gold medals, was celebrated enthusiastically back home. The charismatic fencer, known for his good looks and tall stature, has become a veritable heartthrob.
What many fans may not know, however, is that Cheung’s heart already belongs to another athlete – a 26-year-old French fencer named Solène Butruille. The pair’s relationship, which has been an open secret within their sporting circles, has only recently come to light following Cheung’s latest triumph.
Cheung’s romance with Butruille is not his first high-profile relationship. In the past, he dated a former member of Hong Kong’s national cycling team. Kong, who won a silver medal in the team sprint event at the 2019 Asian Games, was once considered a “golden couple” with Cheung in the local sporting world.
However, Cheung has since confirmed that he is currently single, following his split from Kong after the Tokyo Olympics. It now appears that the fencer’s heart has found a new home – with his French counterpart Butruille.
Evidence of Cheung and Butruille’s relationship surfaced after the Hong Kong athlete’s victory, when the French fencer took to social media to shower him with praise. Butruille posted a series of Instagram stories, including one where she affectionately referred to Cheung as “The Legend Ka Long.”
Further inspection of Butruille’s social media revealed even more telling signs of the couple’s bond. In one post, she is pictured wearing Hong Kong’s team colours and holding an Olympic accreditation that identifies her as Cheung’s “Personal Coach/Support Personnel.”
Cheung has acknowledged the significance of winning gold in Paris, a city he considers a “second home” due to the presence of his French coach, Greg Bongiorni. It now seems that Butruille, who has represented France in various fencing competitions, including the Challenge International des Hauts de Seine in 2022, has become an integral part of Cheung’s support system.
The couple, appear to have found harmony in their shared passion for the sport. Butruille, a medical student, has showcased her fencing prowess on her social media, garnering praise from fans who believe she is the perfect match for Cheung.
