Hong Kong top filmmaker Corey Yuen’s passing due to COVID-19 kept secret by family for two years

12th August 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong film industry is in mourning following the news that renowned action director and choreographer Corey Yuen passed away two years ago due to COVID-19. The news, confirmed by veteran actor and producer Tin Kai-Man, had been kept private at the request of Yuen’s family until now.

Yuen, one of the founding members of the influential “Seven Little Fortunes” martial arts group, was a pioneering figure in the world of Hong Kong action cinema. He was renowned for his innovative fight sequences and close collaborations with some of the industry’s biggest stars, including Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

In a Weibo post commemorating the 65th anniversary of the “Seven Little Fortunes”, Chan expressed his grief over the loss of his longtime friend and collaborator. “It is with profound sadness we bid farewell to Corey Yuen, whose legacy in action cinema is unparalleled,” wrote Chan. “Let us honour his memory together.”

Yuen’s career spanned over four decades, during which he not only choreographed and directed numerous influential action films, but also made a significant impact on the genre globally. His Hollywood breakthrough came with the 1998 hit “Lethal Weapon 4”, which paved the way for further success in films like “X-Men” (2000) and “Romeo Must Die” (2000).
