15th January 2025 – (Seoul) Yoon Suk Yeol, the impeached president of South Korea, was taken to a detention centre near Seoul on Wednesday night following a lengthy questioning session by anti-corruption officials. This unprecedented action follows Yoon’s controversial declaration of martial law on 3rd December, which is now under scrutiny for potential rebellion charges.

The detention occurred during a significant law enforcement operation at the presidential residence, where Yoon was apprehended after a standoff with police. Despite his insistence that the anti-corruption agency lacked authority to investigate him, he ultimately complied to avoid escalating tensions. Yoon, who is the first sitting South Korean president to be detained, now faces the potential for severe legal repercussions.

In a video message released prior to his transfer, Yoon lamented that the “rule of law has completely collapsed” in the nation. He justified his martial law declaration as a necessary governance measure against what he described as an “anti-state” opposition.

Earlier in the day, approximately 3,200 police officers were mobilised to execute the arrest warrant, resulting in a protracted standoff before Yoon surrendered. Following his questioning, he was transported to a detention facility in Uiwang, escorted by police and security personnel.

Yoon’s detention could extend for weeks as investigators determine the next steps. The anti-corruption agency has 48 hours to seek a formal arrest order. Should this occur, Yoon could remain in custody for up to 20 days as the case proceeds to public prosecutors. If indicted, he may face a prolonged period of detention leading to a trial, with serious charges that could result in life imprisonment or the death penalty under South Korean law.
