iOS 18.1 introduces built-in call recording feature for iPhone users

31st October 2024 – (Cupertino) Apple’s latest update, iOS 18.1, finally allows iPhone users to record phone calls directly from the Phone app, a long-awaited feature that simplifies the process significantly. Previously, users had to rely on third-party applications, but now the capability is seamlessly integrated into the system.

To record a call, users simply need to tap the new waveform icon located in the upper left corner of the call screen during a conversation. This feature is compatible with all devices running iOS 18 and works for both outgoing and incoming calls, including FaceTime audio calls. Once activated, a voice alert will inform both parties that the call is being recorded.

However, there are important considerations regarding the legality of recording calls. While Apple has provided guidance on regions where this feature may not be available—such as the European Union—users are strongly encouraged to seek permission from the other party before recording. Legal requirements around call recording can vary significantly by location.

After recording, users can easily manage their audio files, which are stored in the Notes app as separate entries along with transcripts. For those interested in further enhancing their experience, iOS 18.1 also introduces Apple Intelligence features, allowing users to summarise recorded calls and access additional functionalities.

To turn off the call recording feature, users can navigate to the Phone settings within the Settings app and disable the option as needed.
