Itacho Sushi shuts all outlets except Causeway Bay after founder’s passing

31st October 2024 – (Hong Kong) Itacho Sushi, once a leading name in the local sushi scene, has announced the closure of six of its branches this year, leaving only its Causeway Bay outlet operational. The brand, founded by the late Ricky Cheng Wai-tao, has struggled to maintain its prominence in a competitive market, sparking discussions among netizens about the reasons behind its decline.

Established over a decade ago, Itacho Sushi was once considered the “top dog” among Hong Kong’s chain sushi restaurants, boasting as many as 27 outlets across the region at its peak. However, in the face of economic downturns and increased competition, the chain’s sales have significantly dwindled. As of early this year, only seven branches remained, situated in areas like Tseung Kwan O, Sha Tin, and Western District, but these have since closed.

Social media reactions have highlighted the rapid decline of Itacho Sushi, particularly following Cheng’s passing in April. One Facebook user noted witnessing renovations at the Mong Kok location, with workers seen preparing for what appeared to be a demolition. Current online reservations indicate that only the Causeway Bay location remains operational, with the company’s social media accounts having ceased updates since February.

Analysts and netizens have speculated that the surge of new sushi chains, particularly “Sushiro,” has drawn customers away from Itacho Sushi. Comments such as “Everyone is flocking to Sushiro” reflect a growing trend among locals who now prefer newer offerings, suggesting a shift in consumer preferences that Itacho Sushi has failed to adapt to.
