31st October 2024 – (Hong Kong) The National Immigration Administration of China announced on Thursday that a joint operation has led to the arrest of 201 individuals involved in organised smuggling activities aimed at Hong Kong. The operation, which was coordinated by the Guangxi Public Security Bureau in collaboration with Shenzhen’s border control and Guangdong’s immigration authorities, highlights a concerted effort to combat cross-border smuggling along the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Maca border.
The investigation began in May when mainland authorities uncovered critical intelligence regarding an organised smuggling network. Following this lead, the National Immigration Administration spearheaded a collaborative enforcement effort with law enforcement agencies from Hong Kong and Macao. This initiative has resulted in the apprehension of 18 principal suspects and 86 individuals attempting to enter Hong Kong illegally.
Authorities dismantled three counterfeit document production facilities and seized 12 pieces of equipment used for creating fake identification. Additionally, Hong Kong’s Immigration Department identified 37 transit points used in the smuggling operation and confiscated a number of fraudulent permanent residency cards.
A representative from the National Immigration Administration stated that efforts will continue to enhance cooperation between mainland law enforcement and Hong Kong-Macao authorities. This includes strengthening controls at land and sea borders to effectively combat smuggling activities and maintain the integrity of the region’s immigration system.
