2nd August 2024 – (Washington) Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her running mate for the 2024 presidential election within the next week, as a slew of potential contenders makes public appearances on her behalf, according to people familiar with the matter.
Harris plans to campaign with her newly selected running mate next Tuesday, Politico reported, citing sources close to the vice president’s team. The announcement would come as Harris continues to position herself as the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election.
During a campaign stop in Atlanta on Tuesday, Harris took aim at former President Donald Trump and his repeated criticisms of her, arguing he should “say it to my face” at a future presidential debate.
“If the former president has an issue with me, he should have the courage to come out and say it himself, not through some report or rumour,” Harris told supporters. “I’ll be here, ready to debate him anytime, anywhere.”
The speculation around Harris’ running mate has dominated political discourse in recent weeks, with a number of prominent Democrats jockeying for the coveted position. Among the reported contenders are California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Rep. Adam Schiff of California.
Meanwhile, Republicans continue to fight off criticism of Trump’s pick for the GOP nomination, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, after the first-term senator doubled down on a resurfaced old argument that “childless cat ladies” have no stake in America.
“I think the best way to understand the political class in this country is, they are not having kids,” Vance said in a recent interview. “They don’t have a stake in the future of this country in the same way that people who do have kids do.”
