14th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Kim Minho, a South Korean chocolatier accused of murdering his wife and son, formed an unlikely friendship with Khaw Kim Sun, a Malaysian anaesthesiologist now facing similar charges. Both men were held at the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, where their paths crossed during a horrific period marked by tragedy and despair.
Kim, who was arrested on 14th January, 2018, for the alleged murders of his wife and six-year-old son at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, faced grave accusations that ultimately led to his demise. During his detention, Kim befriended Khaw, who was grappling with his own legal troubles. The two men bonded over their shared experiences, with Kim seeking Khaw’s assistance as an English translator.
Kim Minho’s story took a fatal turn when he took his own life in April 2018 while still in custody. His death prompted an inquest where Khaw provided testimony, recalling the brief yet impactful friendship they had forged during their time together. Kim left behind a poignant letter addressed to Khaw, expressing gratitude for his support and affectionately referring to him as “Brother Kim.”
The parallels between their cases are striking. Khaw, who was convicted of murdering his wife and daughter using an inflatable yoga ball filled with carbon monoxide, had also experienced a tumultuous personal life, characterised by infidelity and emotional turmoil. His retrial culminated in a guilty verdict earlier this month, further complicating the narrative surrounding both men.
