15th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A lithium battery incident occurred at MTR Tsim Sha Tsui station today, when a passenger’s battery began to emit smoke on a train heading towards Tsuen Wan. The police received reports of the incident at 7.06pm. Quick-thinking passengers used an onboard fire extinguisher to douse the smoke, preventing any injuries.
Witnesses reported that a passenger promptly kicked the smoking battery out of the carriage before extinguishing it. Photos circulating online revealed a significant amount of white powder on the train floor. All passengers were evacuated to the platform as staff attended to the situation, with many remaining to observe the unfolding events.
Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident, and train services have since returned to normal.
