31st October 20204 – (Hong Kong) Luckin Coffee, the rapidly growing Chinese coffee chain, is set to open its second outlet in Hong Kong at Shop 1038A, MCP Central in Tseung Kwan O. This follows the recent unveiling of its first Hong Kong location at Mira Place in Tsim Sha Tsui on 28 October, signalling the brand’s aggressive expansion strategy in the region.
Social media users have reported spotting construction barriers at the new Tseung Kwan O site, prominently displaying “Coming Soon” signage, indicating that the café is preparing for its launch. This move illustrates Luckin’s confidence in the Hong Kong market, joining a wave of mainland brands establishing a presence in the city.
The new café will occupy a prime location in the shopping centre, which already features other popular chains, including Starbucks. Online discussions have emerged comparing the two, with netizens weighing in on factors such as pricing, seating comfort, and location. Some users expressed concerns about whether Luckin’s pricing strategy, reflective of its mainland operations, could withstand Hong Kong’s notoriously high rental costs.
Founded in 2017, Luckin Coffee has rapidly ascended to become one of China’s largest coffee chains, known for its innovative business model and aggressive expansion tactics. The company has gained significant attention, particularly following its collaboration with Moutai to launch a unique flavour of coffee earlier this year.
As more mainland brands, continue to penetrate the Hong Kong market, the competition among coffee shops intensifies. With its second outlet soon to open, Luckin Coffee is poised to capture a share of the local coffee-drinking population, as it navigates the challenges of operating in a high-cost environment.
