1st October 2024 – (Macao) On Tuesday, China’s Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) marked National Day with a vibrant series of events, including a flag-raising ceremony, a government reception, the opening of the new Macao Bridge, and a dazzling fireworks display.
The day began with a flag-raising ceremony at Golden Lotus Square, where Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng expressed gratitude for the continued support from the central government. He referred to Macao as a “precious gem,” emphasising the commitment to maintaining its prosperity and stability while maximising opportunities for development.
During a reception held at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex, Ho noted that the SAR government has adhered to the “one country, two systems” principle over the past five years, ensuring the safeguarding of national sovereignty and security.
A highlight of the celebrations was the official opening of Macao’s fourth sea-crossing bridge, the Macao Bridge, which connects the Macao Peninsula to Taipa. Ho stated that this new infrastructure would enhance the city’s ambitions to become a global tourism and leisure hub, while also improving the quality of life for residents and promoting economic diversification. The Macao Bridge, spanning approximately 3.1 kilometres and featuring eight lanes, includes a 2.9-kilometre water section with two spans of 280 metres across navigation channels.
The day’s festivities concluded with a spectacular fireworks show, part of the 32nd Macao International Fireworks Display Contest. Organised by the SAR’s tourism office, the contest features ten teams from around the globe, showcasing their pyrotechnic artistry from 14th September to 6th October.
