10th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has reported that a 4.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2.40pm today over the sea south of Shanwei, Guangdong. The epicentre was located at coordinates 21.30N, 115.72E, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong. The earthquake had a focal depth of around 10 kilometres.
In the aftermath, the Observatory received more than ten reports from residents who felt minor shaking, which lasted only a few seconds. The initial assessment indicated a local intensity of III (three) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, suggesting that the tremors were felt indoors and resembled the vibrations caused by light trucks passing by
