8th May 2024 – (Los Angeles) Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh has secured her next major project as the lead in Blade Runner 2099, a limited series produced by Prime Video. The series serves as a follow-up to the 2017 movie sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
Details regarding Yeoh’s character and the plot of the show are being kept under wraps. However, this marks another expansion of the sci-fi franchise, which is based on Philip K. Dick’s influential novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” The franchise began with Ridley Scott’s classic 1982 film, Blade Runner. Production for Blade Runner 2099 recently commenced overseas after a year-long delay caused by the disruptions of 2023. Initially scheduled to film in Belfast, the production was relocated to Prague due to the work stoppage.
Silka Luisa, the showrunner of the limited series, is also executive producing, alongside Ridley Scott, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan van Tulleken, known for his work on “Shōgun,” is directing the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer. Steven Johnson is the co-executive producer, and the production company in Prague is Film United.
Yeoh made history last year as the first Best Actress Oscar winner of Asian descent for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. She gained prominence in the 1990s through her appearances in Hong Kong action films and has since starred in numerous critically acclaimed projects. Apart from her role in A24’s Everything Everywhere, she has recently been seen in Netflix’s The Brothers Sun and The Witcher: Blood Origins, as well as A Haunting in Venice and other films.
Having recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the nation, Yeoh’s upcoming projects include Jon M. Chu’s Wicked and Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek: Section 31, where she will reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery. She is also set to appear in the sequels to Avatar, directed by James Cameron. Yeoh is represented by David Unger at Artist International Group.
