5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) As Super Typhoon Yagi approaches, bringing with it severe gales and storm conditions, Hong Kong’s public transport services have been significantly scaled back under the enforced No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal.
As of 9pm today, the centre of Super Typhoon Yagi was located approximately 330 kilometres south of Hong Kong, moving west-northwest across the northern part of the South China Sea. The typhoon is expected to pass closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning, roughly 300 kilometres southwest of the city, affecting the Pearl River Estuary with gale-force winds.
In response to the severe weather forecast, MTR Corporation has announced limited service operations across its network. While train services on various lines are maintaining headways for peak hours, a reduction in frequency is anticipated as the storm progresses. Specifically, services on the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Island, and South Island lines are currently operating every 10 minutes, with reduced frequencies on other lines.
MTR buses have suspended service altogether, with an extension in Airport Express services from the airport to Hong Kong station until approximately 1.15am to accommodate arriving passengers. Conversely, services from Hong Kong station to the airport will maintain normal scheduling.
Additionally, open-air train segments and Light Rail services may be suspended without prior notice if weather conditions deteriorate further, prioritizing passenger safety.
Several bus routes operated by KMB and Long Win Bus have suspended most daytime services, with limited operations continuing on selected routes. Citybus has also begun phasing out its daytime routes as of 8.30pm, with only a few routes providing limited services.
The Marine Department has announced the temporary closure of the Hong Kong Macao Ferry Terminal, and Sun Ferry has indicated that services to Cheung Chau and Mui Wo will be suspended after tonight’s last ferries.
