5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong is bracing for the impact of Typhoon Yagi, with the Hong Kong Observatory issuing Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 at 6.20pm today. This follows last year’s devastating “once-in-a-century” floods, which significantly affected MTR Wong Tai Sin Station and other areas.

Mok Wing-cheong, Director of Drainage Services, led a team to inspect flood-prone locations today, stating that officials had already surveyed over 240 sites susceptible to blockage. The department has activated its emergency response centres, deploying teams across 30 locations dedicated to disaster management.

Mok announced that emergency action plans have been implemented for 26 low-lying coastal areas at risk from the storm. These include the installation of flood barriers in locations such as Tai O, Lei Yue Mun, and Sam Mun Tsai. Additionally, over 11,000 sandbags have been made available to residents in various districts.

During last year’s severe flooding, MTR Wong Tai Sin Station’s concourse and platform, along with the lower levels of Temple Mall North, were severely inundated. Mok assured that enhanced preventive measures are in place this time, as the Drainage Services Department collaborates with other government agencies to mitigate the effects of Typhoon Yagi.
