17th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A new stretch of the GreenWay, approximately 500 metres long, has officially opened to the public today, January 17, at the Kai Tak Promenade, located in the western part of the former runway area. This marks the second section of the GreenWay designed for shared use by pedestrians and cyclists within the Kai Tak Development (KTD).
The newly inaugurated section runs alongside Victoria Harbour, offering users stunning views of the waterway. With a width of about six metres, the GreenWay provides ample space for both pedestrians and cyclists. Ground markings have been implemented to help guide users in maintaining appropriate distances, thereby enhancing safety. Additionally, signs and speed-reducing rumble strips have been installed in select areas to encourage responsible cycling speeds. Bicycle parking facilities are also available along the route, and a barrier-free walkway for pedestrians runs parallel to the GreenWay, providing an alternative path for the public.
In the initial phase following the opening, ambassadors will be stationed along the GreenWay to offer reminders to users regarding safety and etiquette. Banners displaying the relevant rules have been placed on-site, and the Government plans to increase public awareness of the GreenWay’s benefits and safety measures.
The GreenWay in KTD spans a total length of approximately 13 kilometres, connecting various open spaces in the area. The first section, situated at the Kai Tak Promenade near the eastern end of the Kai Tak Bridge, was launched in September last year, and today’s opening adds to the growing infrastructure. Further sections will be opened progressively in accordance with the implementation schedule of ongoing infrastructure projects and green spaces in the vicinity. The Civil Engineering and Development Department oversaw the planning and design of the GreenWay, while the Leisure and Cultural Services Department manages the newly opened section.
