5th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) On Sunday, two new high-speed rail services officially commenced, linking Hong Kong with Xi’an and Wuhan, two key cities in mainland China. This development significantly improves connectivity between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the rest of the country.

A train departed Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, at 11.04am, while another left Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, around 4pm. Both stations celebrated the launch with performances and festivities.

The journey from Hong Kong to Xi’an, which includes a stop in Wuhan, takes less than 11 hours, with additional stops in the provinces of Shaanxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, and Guangdong. Trains from Wuhan to Hong Kong complete the trip in under five hours, making stops in Hunan and Guangdong, with return journeys scheduled to depart Hong Kong at 7.19am the following day.

Luo Xin, deputy head of the Xi’an station under China Railway Xi’an Group Co., Ltd., stated, “To ensure top-notch services, we’ve trained our attendants in essential Cantonese and English.”

This new direct service from Xi’an, renowned for the Terracotta Warriors, is expected to facilitate easier travel and enhance cooperation in various fields, including economy, trade, and culture.

With the addition of these routes, Hong Kong now has four train services to Wuhan, a city with a population exceeding 13 million, providing greater convenience for passengers on short trips, business travels, or family visits.

Since entering the high-speed rail era in 2018 with the launch of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, Hong Kong continues to strengthen its rail connections. China plans to expand its high-speed rail network to about 60,000 kilometres by 2030, up from 48,000 kilometres at the end of 2024.
