31st October 2024 – (Seoul) North Korea has fired a ballistic missile towards its eastern waters, as confirmed by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday. This launch follows recent intelligence assessments indicating that North Korea is nearing preparations for its seventh nuclear test and is close to developing a long-range missile capable of striking the United States.
The Japanese Coast Guard also reported the missile launch, which underscores the growing concerns regarding Pyongyang’s expanding military capabilities. Since 2022, North Korea has significantly accelerated its weapons testing programme, demonstrating an increasingly aggressive stance.
In September, North Korea announced that leader Kim Jong Un had overseen the successful testing of two missiles, including one designed to carry a “super-large conventional warhead.” The second missile was described as a “strategic” cruise missile, suggesting potential advancements in nuclear delivery systems.
The latest missile launch occurred just hours after US and South Korean defence chiefs urged North Korea to withdraw its troops from Russia, where an estimated 10,000 personnel are believed to be stationed for potential operations against Ukrainian forces. This context of heightened military activity raises alarms about regional stability and the prospect of further escalations in the Korean Peninsula.
