9th January 2025 – (Tokyo) Police in Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, have referred a sexual assault case involving a U.S. Marine to prosecutors, according to local media reports. This incident marks yet another chapter in a series of allegations concerning violence against women on the island, which is home to a significant portion of U.S. military facilities.
The serviceman, believed to be in his thirties and currently in U.S. custody, is suspected of sexually assaulting and injuring an adult woman in November last year. The information was revealed by Kyodo News, citing sources familiar with the investigation. The incident has reignited discussions around the impact of the U.S. military presence in Okinawa, particularly concerning the safety and well-being of local women.
On Wednesday, Okinawa police officially notified the prefectural government of the case’s referral to prosecutors. Details regarding whether the suspect has acknowledged the allegations remain unclear. According to reports, the assault took place in a building situated in the central region of Okinawa’s main island. The two individuals allegedly met for the first time on the day of the incident, and the woman promptly reported the assault to local authorities.
Police were able to identify the suspect, utilising security camera footage from the vicinity, and subsequently questioned him voluntarily. The speed and efficiency of the police investigation have been commended in light of the serious nature of the allegations.
Okinawa’s Governor Denny Tamaki has expressed profound regret and anger in response to the incident. “This is a matter of great concern to the people of Okinawa, and we demand a firm response,” he stated in an official release. Governor Tamaki further noted that there have been five serious and heinous crimes within the past year that blatantly disregard the human rights and dignity of women. He emphasized the necessity of lodging strong protests with both the Japanese and U.S. governments to address these ongoing issues.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Okinawa houses approximately 70% of all U.S. military bases in Japan, despite comprising only about 0.6% of the country’s total land area. This disproportionate presence has long been a source of tension between the local community and the U.S. military, with numerous incidents of crime attributed to service personnel and nonmilitary staff. The repeated occurrences of such crimes have fostered a strong sense of resentment among Okinawa residents, who feel their safety is being compromised.
Last year, local anger intensified following revelations that the Japanese central government had failed to report two alleged sexual assault cases involving U.S. military personnel to the Okinawa prefectural government. This lack of transparency has further strained relations between the local population and the authorities, leading to calls for greater accountability and protective measures.
