16th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Reports indicate that one Hong Kong resident is anticipated to return to the city today after being abducted to Southeast Asia for involvement in scam operations. This development comes amid rising concerns over the resurgence of human trafficking and fraudulent schemes in the region.

According to the Security Bureau, there are currently 12 Hong Kong individuals illegally detained in Myanmar, forced to participate in fraudulent activities. The Secretary for Security, Chris Tang Ping-keung, acknowledged in a recent television interview that the rescue operations are fraught with challenges. However, he emphasised that these difficulties do not stem from a lack of effort on the part of the authorities, who are committed to utilising all available resources to ensure the safe return of the affected individuals.

In addition to the hopeful return of one victim, former Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor, Andy Yu Tak-po, revealed that family members of the abducted individuals have arranged a meeting with government officials at the Central Government Offices this afternoon.

Deputy Secretary for Security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip recently led a dedicated team to Thailand to follow up on the situation. Upon returning, he reported that the Thai government is taking the issue seriously and has established a high-level committee to oversee related efforts. While Cheuk refrained from disclosing specific rescue plans, he expressed confidence in the commitment of both the Thai and Hong Kong governments to act swiftly, though no definitive timeline has been set for the remaining victims’ rescue.
