31st October 2024 – (Taipei) Typhoon Kong-rey has made landfall in eastern Taiwan, leading to massive disruptions in air travel, with over 500 flights cancelled. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that Kong-rey, classified as a strong typhoon, struck near Taitung on Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds across the region.
As of the latest updates, at least 229 domestic flights and 314 international and cross-strait flights have been cancelled, affecting airlines including Uni Airways and Mandarin Airlines, which suspended all domestic operations. China Airlines, EVA Air, and Tigerair Taiwan also cancelled several international flights to destinations such as Hong Kong and Macau.
The typhoon’s centre was located approximately 110 kilometres east of Oluanpi, Taiwan’s southernmost point, with maximum sustained winds reaching 184 kph and gusts up to 227 kph. The storm is moving northwest at 28 kph and is expected to exit the region overnight.
CWA forecaster Chu Mei-lin warned of excessive rainfall, predicting totals could exceed 200mm within 24 hours in eastern and northern Taiwan. Mountainous areas, particularly in Yilan and Hualien counties, may experience even greater amounts.
In preparation for the storm, numerous transport services have been suspended. Taipei Metro services will adjust operations based on passenger volume and wind conditions, while the Taiwan Railways Administration has halted services on major lines, including the west and east main lines.
