8th January 2025 – (Ulaanbaatar) Inner Mongolia’s Hohhot and the Ulanqab region have recently experienced a remarkable natural spectacle known as “cold light pillars.” Following several days of low temperatures, vibrant beams of light shot up into the night sky, creating a stunning display.
The phenomenon, characterised by its colourful vertical light columns, occurs under specific conditions: temperatures must fall below 0°C, there should be high humidity, and calm winds are essential. This unique ice halo effect forms when moisture in the air condenses into ice crystals, reflecting surrounding lights to create a breathtaking visual display.
The sight has captivated residents and visitors alike, with the interplay of colours and light making for an extraordinary spectacle.
