Renowned violinist Ray Chen to showcase musical brilliance in violin recital presented by Great Music 2024

6th May 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s (LCSD) Great Music 2024 presents an extraordinary event with “Violin Recital by Ray Chen” scheduled for June. With the collaboration of esteemed pianist Julio Elizalde, the highly sought-after violinist will captivate music enthusiasts with two eagerly anticipated recitals, showcasing his virtuosity and musical prowess.

The recitals will delve into a diverse repertoire, commencing with Tartini’s “Sonata in G minor, ‘Devil’s Trill'” and Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30, No. 2” in the first performance. The second recital will feature Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 8 in G, Op. 30” and Saint-Saëns’s “Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 75.” The second half of the recitals will mesmerize the audience with J.S. Bach’s “Violin Partita No. 3 in E, BWV 1006,” Bazzini’s “La Ronde des Lutins, Op. 25,” Dvořák’s “Slavonic Dance No. 2 in E minor, Op. 72,” and Chen’s reimagined rendition of Chick Corea’s “Spain,” culminating in a perfect conclusion.

Ray Chen rose to prominence after winning the first prize at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in 2008 in England and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2009 in Belgium. He has established a formidable reputation across Europe, Asia, the United States, and Australia through his recorded performances and live concerts, including notable events such as France’s Bastille Day, the Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm, and the BBC Proms. In 2017, Chen was recognized by Forbes as one of the “30 most influential Asians under 30.”

Pianist Julio Elizalde boasts a rich history of collaborations with renowned musicians and has garnered high acclaim for his performances at prominent music centers worldwide. Serving as the artistic director of the Olympic Music Festival in the United States since 2014, Elizalde is currently a visiting professor of piano at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.

The captivating “Violin Recital by Ray Chen” will take place at 8pm on 7th and 8th June (Friday and Saturday) at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall. Pre-concert talks, conducted in Cantonese, will be held at 6.45 pm on 7th and 8th June, respectively, at the Committee Room North, 7/F, High Block, Hong Kong City Hall. The first talk, “From Baroque to Fusion Jazz: Unveiling the Magical Journey of the Violin,” will be hosted by music practitioner Albert Ho. The second talk, “Original Works and Arrangements,” will be hosted by music critic Ernest Wan. Admission is free, with limited seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
