5th September 2024 – (Georgia) A devastating shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, on Wednesday has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two students and two teachers, with nine others wounded, according to local authorities.

The shooter has been identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the high school. The incident unfolded shortly before 10.30am when Gray opened fire on the campus. He surrendered to law enforcement upon being confronted by a school resource officer, as confirmed by Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), during a press briefing.

In response to the shooting, multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. Gray is expected to face murder charges and will be tried as an adult. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith stated that there appears to be no known connection between the shooter and the victims.

The injured have been transported to local hospitals, with some suffering from gunshot wounds while others experienced panic attack symptoms. Following the incident, the school was placed on a hard lockdown, and Barrow County schools will remain closed for the remainder of the week, according to county superintendent Dallas LeDuff.

In the aftermath of the shooting, officials have heightened patrols around campuses in the Atlanta area. U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his condolences, lamenting the “senseless gun violence” that has marred what should have been a joyous back-to-school period in Winder, Georgia. He reiterated calls for lawmakers to implement stricter gun control measures, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as universal background checks.

The Gun Violence Archive reports that over 380 mass shootings have occurred in the United States in 2024 alone, highlighting the ongoing crisis of gun violence in the country.
