8th January 2025 – (Perth) Three individuals are currently missing, while three others have been hospitalised with serious injuries following a seaplane crash off the coast of Western Australia (WA).
According to WA Police, the privately owned aircraft went down around 4pm local time after colliding with a large rock near Rottnest Island, approximately 20 km from Perth. At the time of the incident, seven people were aboard the plane, including the pilot.
Three passengers were rescued from the water with serious injuries and subsequently airlifted to local hospitals, while a fourth individual was found unharmed.
A major search operation was initiated for the three missing persons but was suspended overnight. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch addressed the media, assuring the community that substantial resources were on site and that every effort was being made for the rescue.
Aerial footage captured by television crews revealed the plane submerged nose down in the water, with debris scattered nearby.
WA Premier Roger Cook expressed his concern on social media, describing the scene as deeply troubling.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that the seaplane involved in the incident was a brand-new model. Witness Greg Quin informed ABC radio that the crash occurred shortly after the aircraft took off from Thomson Bay on the island’s east coast.
Rottnest Island is a popular tourist destination, renowned for its quokka population—a small marsupial—and is serviced by several companies offering air transfers from Perth.
