7th April 2023 – (Hong Kong) Dr Choi Yuk-lin, the Secretary for Education, is set to embark on a trip to Zhejiang and Shanghai on 10th April to learn about their advancements in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, early childhood education, and teacher training. The visit aims to foster education interflow and cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland China.
During her trip, Dr Choi will hold meetings with officials from Zhejiang Province and Shanghai Municipality to exchange views on education and explore opportunities for collaboration. These discussions will provide valuable insights into the latest developments and best practices in the field of education, including STEAM education, which emphasises the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in the learning process.
Dr Choi’s itinerary includes visits to renowned institutions in Zhejiang and Shanghai that are at the forefront of education innovation. These institutions include the China Academy of Art, Zhejiang Shuren University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Alibaba Group, among others. These visits will provide an opportunity for Dr Choi to observe firsthand the innovative approaches and strategies being implemented in these institutions to promote STEAM education and early childhood education.
As part of her trip, Dr Choi will also visit Anji County to study the Anji Play, a renowned early childhood education approach that focuses on outdoor play and exploration. This visit will allow Dr Choi to gain insights into the Anji Play philosophy and its implementation in early childhood education settings, which could potentially be adopted in Hong Kong to enhance early childhood education practices.
After her visit to Zhejiang, Dr Choi will proceed to Shanghai, where she will visit East China Normal University and Shanghai Normal University. These visits will provide an opportunity for Dr Choi to learn about the latest developments in teacher training and education research in Shanghai, which could potentially contribute to enhancing teacher professionalism and educational practices in Hong Kong.
During her visit to Shanghai, Dr Choi will also meet with Hong Kong youths who are stationed in the city. This engagement will allow Dr Choi to understand the experiences and challenges faced by Hong Kong youths pursuing education or career opportunities in Shanghai, and explore ways to further support their educational and professional development.
Dr Choi will return to Hong Kong on the night of April 13. During her absence, Mr Sze Chun-fai, the Under Secretary for Education, will be the Acting Secretary for Education, ensuring continuity in the administration of education policies and initiatives in Hong Kong.
