12th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Security Bureau is dispatching a task force to Thailand on Sunday to address the growing issue of residents being enticed and ensnared in Southeast Asian nations for illicit employment. The recent ordeal involving mainland Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was recently held hostage in Myanmar after a trip to Thailand, has sparked alarm within Hong Kong’s community.
The Security Bureau disclosed that they had received 28 distress calls from Hong Kong residents in Southeast Asian countries since the second quarter of 2024, with 16 individuals successfully repatriated thus far. The remaining 12 cases involved individuals reporting limitations on their movements but remained in safe conditions with the ability to communicate with family members or authorities.
Wang Xing, went missing upon his arrival in Thailand on 3rd January, suspected of falling prey to a bogus casting agent’s promises for a film role. Thai authorities rescued him from a fraudulent online setup in a Myanmar town bordering Thailand, confirming his status as a human trafficking victim before repatriating him to mainland China last Friday.
Following these events, Hong Kong singer Eason Chan cancelled his upcoming Bangkok concert on 22nd February citing safety concerns for Chinese citizens and fans travelling to Thailand in light of recent incidents. Additionally, a 24-year-old Hong Kong woman was reported missing in Thailand, leading to a coordinated effort by the Immigration Department and authorities to secure her return to Hong Kong in response to her family’s distress call.
Andy Yu Tak-po, former Vice Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, has been pivotal in aiding families affected by such predicaments, with the number of cases under his purview now reaching seven. Yu’s proactive involvement includes liaising with relevant authorities and embassies to ensure the safe return of Hong Kong residents facing illegal detentions in Southeast Asia.
As the situation unfolds, Yu continues to provide updates on social media platforms, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance among individuals travelling to Southeast Asia for work or leisure. The rise in distress calls indicates a pressing need for enhanced awareness and caution among Hong Kong residents venturing to popular destinations like Thailand.
Despite Thailand’s enduring popularity among Hong Kong travellers, recent events have cast a shadow over the tourism sector, prompting collaborative efforts between the Thai government and its consulate in Hong Kong to support affected families and ensure the safety of individuals caught in such distressing circumstances.
