Severe winter storm hits the eastern U.S., bringing blizzard conditions

5th January 2025 – (New York) A formidable winter storm struck the United States on Sunday, January 5, with meteorologists warning that millions in the eastern regions would face blizzard conditions. Some areas are predicted to experience the heaviest snowfall seen in a decade.

Over 60 million people are in the path of this dangerous storm, which is expected to plunge the eastern half of the country into a deep freeze of Arctic air through Monday, resulting in severe travel disruptions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued warnings of ice, snow, and gale-force winds affecting states from the central plains to the Mid-Atlantic. A broad area spanning 2,400 kilometres, from western Kansas to the coastal states of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia, is under immediate threat.

The NWS reported, “A disruptive winter storm will impact the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic through Monday, bringing widespread heavy snow and damaging ice accumulations.” Notably, regions from northeastern Kansas to north-central Missouri are expected to see “the heaviest snowfall in a decade.”

As extreme weather events become increasingly common due to climate change, this storm is already causing significant travel chaos. Kansas City International Airport announced the suspension of flight operations on Saturday due to rapid ice accumulation, although operations resumed later after runway treatments.

In the eastern states, particularly New York and Pennsylvania, “heavy lake-effect snow” from the Great Lakes could result in accumulations of up to 61 centimetres. Forecasts from AccuWeather suggest that totals in the area could exceed four feet, creating dangerous conditions.

A blizzard is expected to sweep across the Central Plains by early Sunday, with “whiteout conditions” rendering travel extremely hazardous and making many roads impassable. The US capital, Washington, may receive five inches or more of snow, with nearby areas potentially seeing up to ten inches.

With the jet stream shifting southward, temperatures are forecast to drop dramatically, plunging to -18 degrees Celsius in some regions, compounded by strong wind gusts. The mercury could fall tens of degrees below seasonal averages, reaching down to the Gulf Coast.

Moreover, freezing rain and sleet are anticipated from Kansas to Kentucky and Virginia, creating hazardous road conditions, downed trees, and power lines, potentially leaving millions without electricity during the cold snap. The NWS anticipates widespread tree damage and “long-lasting power outages” across Kansas to the central Appalachian Mountains.

Particularly in the Appalachians, where communities are still recovering from a recent hurricane, the new storm poses significant dangers. Governor Andy Beshear warned that the storm “will likely cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions on our roads and could lead to substantial power outages just 24 hours before it gets really cold in Kentucky.”

In response to the impending storm, the governors of Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia have declared states of emergency and are urging residents to prepare for hazardous weather conditions this weekend.
