Shek O Beach erupts in chaos as surfers evade authorities ahead of Typhoon Yagi

5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) As Typhoon Yagi approaches Hong Kong, Shek O Beach has become a hotspot for thrill-seeking surfers, despite warnings from local authorities. This afternoon, approximately eight staff members from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department were stationed at the beach, preparing to enforce restrictions. However, three surfers managed to evade the law enforcement officers in a dramatic chase.

Witnesses reported that the surfers, undeterred by the adverse weather conditions, sprinted barefoot while carrying their surfboards, successfully escaping into the nearby Shek O village without facing the anticipated fine of HK$2,000. The officers were left seeking police assistance as they continued their pursuit.

Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan and Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk had previously condemned the actions of these surfers at a press conference, warning that strict penalties would be enforced against those who repeatedly flout safety regulations. Chan emphasised the life-threatening risks associated with such reckless behaviour, stating, “This should not be done, and one should not put themselves in danger.”
