12th January 2025 – (Warsaw) A severe snowstorm has left approximately 32,000 households across Poland, primarily in the northern provinces, without electricity, according to Polish Radio on Sunday. The storm has prompted a significant response from emergency services, with firefighters attending nearly 1,000 weather-related incidents since Thursday. These incidents include broken branches, fallen trees, and downed power lines.
Emergency crews are currently engaged in efforts to restore power, as officials from the Government Security Centre report ongoing challenges due to the severe weather conditions. In addition to power outages, heavy snowfall is expected to persist in eastern, southern, and central regions, with mountainous areas likely to experience the highest levels of accumulation.
The Tatra Mountains are under a level-two avalanche warning until 8 p.m. local time, with the Tatra National Park urging visitors to exercise caution. Authorities have warned of perilous conditions at higher elevations, including deep snowdrifts and unstable snow cornices, which have been further complicated by strong winds.
Amidst the disruptions, Poland’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways has confirmed that all national roads remain passable. To maintain safe travel conditions, over 2,300 snowplows and maintenance vehicles have been deployed overnight.
