14th January 2025 – (Seoul) South Korean actress Song Hye-kyo has candidly shared her experience of being “held captive” for nearly three years while filming Wong Kar-wai’s acclaimed movie, The Grandmaster. Speaking on the YouTube show Fairy’s Table, hosted by Jung Jae-hyung, she recounted her unusual predicament, which she described with a sense of humour, stating, “I was tied up by the director for three years, and they nearly took my passport.”
During the episode, which features a relaxed cooking segment, Song opened up about her career and collaborations with renowned directors like Wong Kar-wai and John Woo. She explained that her involvement in the film came at a time when Hong Kong cinema was extremely popular, and she was eager to learn from Wong’s unique filmmaking style.
Reflecting on her time on set, Song noted that she initially believed the project would entail a brief shooting schedule. However, she ended up spending almost three years in production, often waiting for long hours with little to do. “There were days when I had no opportunity to leave, and I found myself playing badminton with the crew in my bare face at night,” she said.
Her attempts to leave the set were thwarted when Wong Kar-wai reportedly sensed her desire to escape and even suggested that crew members take her passport to prevent her from returning to South Korea. Ultimately, despite the extended wait, her performance amounted to only six to seven minutes of screen time.
