Strong earthquake in Tibet claims at least 9 lives as buildings collapse

7th January 2025 – (Shigatse) At 9.05am today, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Shigatse region of Tibet, with its epicentre located at a depth of 10 kilometres. Official reports confirm that the quake has claimed at least 9 lives, with the most affected areas including Longsuo, Quluo, and Cuoguo townships.

The tremors were strongly felt in Dingri County and nearby regions, leading to widespread panic and the collapse of numerous buildings close to the epicentre. Local authorities reported that rescue operations have commenced, involving personnel from various sectors, including transportation, water resources, and civil affairs, to ensure safe evacuations and assist those in need.

The China Earthquake Networks Centre noted that within a 200-kilometre radius of the epicentre, there have been 29 recorded seismic events of magnitude 3 or higher over the past five years, marking this earthquake as the most significant in recent history for the region.
