12th January 2025 – (Bangkok) On 9th January, the Thai military discovered two Chinese men in a border village, raising concerns that they were potential victims of a human trafficking operation. The men had arranged to hire a vehicle for a trip to Chiang Mai, but their location revealed a natural pathway leading into Myanmar, prompting police suspicions of foul play.
According to reports, the two individuals, aged 27 and 36, entered Thailand via Suvarnabhumi Airport around 5am on 9th January and planned to travel to Chiang Mai. They had agreed to a fare of 2,000 Thai baht with a local driver, who picked them up at 10am and transported them to a village in Tak province by 6pm. Upon arrival, the driver informed them that another vehicle would collect them shortly, allegedly to take them across the border into Myanmar.
At approximately 6.20pm, Thai military forces intervened after identifying the men’s precarious situation. Authorities confirmed the potential trafficking threat due to the proximity of the natural crossing into Myanmar. Subsequently, police took the men to the Mae Sot police station for documentation and arranged for their safe return home, contacting their families to facilitate their repatriation.
