10th January 2025 – (Bangkok) Thai authorities have launched investigations into the disappearances of two Chinese nationals, raising concerns over safety in Thailand as human trafficking fears intensify. This follows the recent case of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was found near the Thai-Myanmar border after reportedly being trafficked.
Wang’s situation, which involved being lured to Thailand under the pretext of a casting opportunity, mirrors the cases of a missing male model, Yang Zeqi, and a young woman, Wu Jiaqi. Yang vanished in late December after travelling to Thailand for a film audition, while Wu, a recent university graduate, lost contact with her family shortly after arriving in the country on 6th January.
Wu JiaqiYang’s relatives have taken to social media to seek assistance, detailing how he received a distress message before losing contact again. His mother reported seeing scars on his face during a video call, prompting concerns about his well-being. Wu’s father has similarly sought help from Thai police after she went silent shortly after checking into a hotel.
These incidents highlight a disturbing trend of Chinese nationals being enticed to Southeast Asia with promises of lucrative jobs, only to find themselves trapped in exploitative conditions, often in cyber scam operations. Wang has since been rescued and has shared his harrowing experience, which included being held with dozens of others in dire circumstances.
The spate of disappearances has sparked significant anxiety among potential Chinese tourists, with discussions on social media questioning the safety of travelling to Thailand. Many are advising against visits, citing fears of scams and trafficking. Despite the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s efforts to reassure visitors and restore confidence, the situation has cast a shadow over the country’s appeal as a travel destination.
While Wang has expressed gratitude towards Thai authorities and confidence in the country’s safety, the alarming circumstances surrounding these disappearances continue to fuel scepticism about the safety of tourists in Thailand.
