13th January 2025 – (Bangkok) The recent case of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who went missing after arriving in Thailand and was later confirmed to have been lured to Myanmar under false pretences, has raised significant concerns over the safety of Chinese citizens abroad. In response, Wu Zhiwu, Deputy Chief of Mission at China’s Embassy in Thailand, met with Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, Thailand’s Senior Inspector General, on 12th January to discuss collaborative efforts to combat transnational crime.

During the meeting, Thatchai outlined the recent initiatives undertaken by Thai police to address cases involving missing Chinese nationals. He reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to bolstering measures against transnational crimes, including human trafficking and telecom fraud, which have become pressing issues in the region.

Wu praised the Thai authorities for their determination to protect Chinese citizens, and both parties engaged in detailed discussions on enhancing cooperation to tackle these criminal activities. The Chinese embassy also issued warnings to its nationals travelling to Thailand, advising them to be cautious of “high-paying job” scams that may lead to exploitation.

Wang, who had travelled to Thailand for a film shoot, was abducted shortly after his arrival on 3rd January, ultimately being rescued on 7th January. This incident has not only attracted widespread media coverage but has also led to increased anxiety among potential travellers to Thailand. Reports indicate a surge in requests for travel cancellations, with the Thai Outbound Travel Association predicting a possible drop of 10% to 20% in Chinese tourist arrivals during the upcoming Spring Festival.

Despite Wang’s reassurances that “Thailand is safe” upon his return, public sentiment remains apprehensive, with many social media users expressing reluctance to visit the country. This incident has highlighted the urgent need for stronger protective measures for foreign nationals and a reassessment of safety protocols within Thailand’s tourism sector.
