5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 will be issued at 6.20pm today and is expected to remain in place until at least noon on Friday. This decision follows the intensification of Super Typhoon Yagi, which is projected to maintain its super typhoon status as it approaches the region.
As a result of the severe weather conditions, all-day school classes will be suspended on Thursday and Friday, impacting students across the territory. Additionally, numerous flights are anticipated to be cancelled due to the worsening weather.
Yagi, a mature storm, is currently affecting local winds, with strong gusts already noted. Maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping, Waglan Island, and Cheung Chau Beach reached 69, 65, and 58 kilometres per hour, respectively, with gusts exceeding 92, 73, and 72 kilometres per hour. The Observatory warns that local winds will continue to strengthen throughout the evening, with heavy squally showers expected to follow.
The government has advised individuals facing long or challenging journeys, especially those returning to outlying islands, to commence their travels promptly. Arrangements are being made to allow government employees to leave work early in light of the impending storm.
The Education Bureau has also issued guidance for schools, emphasising the importance of implementing safety measures to protect students. Schools are instructed to ensure conditions are secure before allowing students to return home after the signal is lifted.
