31st October 2024 – (Hong Kong) A 50-year-old local man was arrested today by the New Territories North Traffic Division for dangerous driving, following a shocking incident involving a BMW that narrowly missed colliding with a baby stroller. The arrest follows a thorough investigation prompted by a viral dashcam video of the incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon.
The alarming near-miss took place around 1pm on Castle Peak Road – Tai Lam, as the BMW sped through a red light. A woman pushing a stroller with her child managed to pull back onto the pavement just in time, as the vehicle swerved dangerously close, resulting in gasps from witnesses inside the car. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
The driver, a local man whose surname is Fu, is currently in custody for questioning. Reports indicate that he was employed as a private driver for a businessman, with the BMW in question being registered normally in Hong Kong, despite speculation regarding the distinctive “FU” registration plate. This type of plate is often associated with vehicles registered outside Hong Kong and is issued international permits for temporary use.
In the wake of the incident, online outrage has erupted, with netizens condemning the driver’s reckless behaviour. Many have called for legal action, emphasising the potential danger posed to families on the road. Comments on social media included statements like, “You nearly killed a child!” and “This person should be prosecuted; they endangered a whole family.”
Authorities have acknowledged the complexities involved in enforcing traffic regulations against vehicles with “FU” plates, as these may complicate identification and prosecution efforts. The Transport Department has previously indicated that while such vehicles can be penalised for traffic violations, enforcement can be hindered by a lack of accessible vehicle information.
