11th January 2025 – (Bangkok) According to reports from local media, the families of two women in their twenties have sought help following their disappearance during a trip to Thailand on 27th December, 2024. The young women, Lin Mei-ling and Xu Hao-ning, had planned to visit a waterfall but were allegedly taken into a scam operation in Myanmar.

At approximately 1.30am local time, the two were picked up by a business vehicle sent by a “friend” in Bangkok. By around 10am that same day, they were forcibly transferred to a jeep, where they lost control of their phones and realised they had been deceived. The jeep continued towards the Thai-Myanmar border, ultimately crossing into Myanmar.

Lin Mei-ling’s boyfriend stated that the two women believed they were being taken directly to the waterfall to save time. However, it later became clear that the route led to the Elephant Sanctuary in Myawaddy. Reports indicated that a ransom of HK$200,000 was demanded for their release.

Further details emerged when Xu Hao-ning’s father noted that his daughter had managed to contact family via social media on 4th and 5th January, but it appeared she was already under control, with captors demanding money for their freedom. Their messages revealed a sense of despair, with phrases like, “I feel so hopeless” and “I really want to die,” highlighting the dire situation they faced.
