5th January 2025 – (Sydney) Two individuals have lost their lives in a light plane crash off Australia’s east coast, north of Sydney. Emergency services responded to reports of the incident around 4pm local time on Saturday, with the crash site located near Nambucca Heads, approximately 400 km from Sydney.
New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed in a statement that both the pilot and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, although their identities have yet to be officially established. According to reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the wreckage was discovered approximately 1.5 km offshore.
In response to the crash, water police, ambulance crews, and a rescue helicopter were dispatched to the area. Superintendent Grant Rice of Fire and Rescue NSW noted that debris had been found washed ashore along the coastline.
NSW Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with assistance from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).
